I've booked my family session...now what the heck do we wear?

If you've ever stood in front of your closet and thought "Why is picking outfits for family photos more difficult than planning a family vacation?!" Don't worry, you're not alone! What you wear for your family photos is HUGE and affects not only how your images look but how they feel. Here are a few tips from your favorite Princeton based photographer to help your outfits come together seamlessly:

Choose a color palette, not matching outfits!

  • Neutrals: Tan, soft gray, oatmeal, cream, off/warm white
  • Earth tones: Rust, terracotta, mustard, olive, chocolate
  • Soft tones: Dusty blue, sage, blush, muted lavender, cream
  • Classic contrast: One accent color paired with neutral colors

A simple rule that works every. single. time:

  • Pick 2-3 main colors
  • Choose 1 accent color
  • When in doubt, mix in neutrals to calm everything down

AVOID: Neons, super-bright primary colors, heavy logos, and characters. They pull attention away from your faces and take away from the photo as a whole.

Focus on texture and layers (this is the secret sauce)!

Texture and layers add a "rich" aspect on camera, even if the outfits are fairly simple.

Great options include:

  • Knits, waffle fabric, linen, denim, corduroy
  • Lace details, ribbed fabrics, soft sweaters
  • Light jackets, cardigans, and vests (a great option for fall/winter sessions)

Keep patterns minimal and intentional!

Patterns are great, but they should not be the lead actor.

Best patterns I like to encourage:

  • Small florals
  • Thin stripes
  • Subtle plaids or gingham
  • Soft, muted prints

Best rule of thumb:

  • Limit 1-2 patterned outfits total
  • Keep patterns in the same color palette

Shoes! They don't need to be fancy, just intentional.

Great options include:

  • Neutral boots, booties, or simple sneakers
  • Clean leather sandals
  • Classic flats or loafers

AVOID: Athletic shoes with bright colors or characters, big logos, super worn/ dirty shoes

***Barefoot is ALWAYS an option!

What mom, dad, and kids should wear!

Moms - start with your outfit to anchor the whole family's palette.

Some ideas of what to wear include:

  • Midi/ maxi dresses with movement
  • Flowy tops with jeans
  • Sweater dresses

Dads don't need complicated outfits - easy, classic, no stress.

Some ideas of what to wear include:

  • Solid henly or sweater with dark jeans
  • Button-down with chinos
  • Neutral jacket layered over a solid top

AVOID: Bright polos with logos, shirts with large graphics, and cargo shorts

Kids should look cohesive and still be able to play.

Good outfit ideas include:

  • Simple dress with texture
  • Overalls with a neutral shirt
  • Soft sweaters and jeans

AVOID: Characters, glittery graphics, and anything that distracts from their face.
